Before you can begin studying in Germany, it is important to find a program that you are interested in and that suits your needs. If you have decided to pursue your education in this Germany, it is important to gather as much information as possible about the requirements and admission criteria for universities in Germany.

Once you’ve selected a study program that you are interested in, you will
need to meet the admission requirements set by your chosen university in order
to be accepted into the program.

  • In order to be accepted your qualifications must be recognized by the university you have chosen. This means that you will need to have a recognized “higher education entrance qualification,” also known as
Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB) or Abitur (aka A-level).
  • If your school-leaving certificate is not recognized in Germany, you may be required to attend a one-year preparatory course called Studienkolleg.
  • Some universities may also require you to take an aptitude test called
TestAS, which is specifically designed for international students from
    non-EU countries.
  • Additionally, you may need to meet language requirements as they are also apart of university admission criteria. For example if your degree program is taught in German, you will need to provide proof of German language proficiency ( DSH or TestDaF).
  • If your program is taught in English you may need to provide IELTS or TOEFL scores as proof of your English language proficiency. These are just some common examples of the admission requirements needed in order to be accepted into a university in Germany which may vary across different universities.

Each university has its own specific admission requirements, these are the most commonly used documents needed to submit an application.

The documents you typically need are:

  • A valid copy of a high school diploma.
  • A filled application form.
  • A copy of your passport and a passport photo.
  • Relevant academic certificates.
  • Proof of language proficiency.
  • A translated overview of your modules and grades.

If you are a citizen of a country that requires a student visa to study
in Germany, you will need to provide proof of financial solvency when
you apply for your visa. Under the current regulations (2023), international
students need to have €11,208 per year to cover their expenses while
studying in Germany. The most common way to provide proof of financial
means at the German Embassy is through a blocked account. This account
is set up specifically for the purpose of proving that you have the
financial resources to cover your expenses while studying in Germany. It
is important to carefully research and plan your financial resources
before applying for a student visa in Germany, as this will help to
ensure that you have the necessary funds to support yourself during your
studies.

Health insurance is an important consideration for international
students who want to study in Germany. All international students must
be insured in the healthcare system while they are in Germany. If you
are a resident of one of the EU/EEA member states, you may be able to
use your existing health insurance and obtain a European Health
Insurance Card (EHIC). However, if you are not a resident of an EU/EEA
member state, you will need to provide proof of health insurance as part
of your student visa application and university enrollment.

If you are a citizen of a country that requires a student visa to enter Germany, you will need to apply for a student visa at the German Embassy or Consulate in your home country. The processing time for a student visa is typically two weeks under normal circumstances.

As an international student in Germany, you have plenty options for
accommodation, including German halls of residence, private apartments,
and shared flats. However, it is important to keep in mind that rent in
Germany can be expensive, and it may be one of your biggest financial
challenges while studying in the country. Once you have found a place to
live, be sure to register your address at the local registration office
in Germany.

University enrollment is the process of officially enrolling in a German higher education institution after being admitted. To complete your enrollment, you will need to submit a number of documents to the Office of Student Affairs and register for your courses. This will enable you to attend lectures, exercises, and examinations.
